Federated Insurance:

Elevated risk of re-vinned vehicles for dealerships

Dealerships across Canada are experiencing a rise in claims related to purchases of re-vinned vehicles. With the increased presence and recent success of recovering stolen items at ports by authorities, organized crime may increasingly shift towards re-vinning these vehicles locally rather than exporting internationally. This process involves swapping a stolen vehicle's VIN with a counterfeit one to hide its true identity, making it easier to sell to unsuspecting buyers.

Preventative measures you can take
Following are some steps you can take to help prevent the purchase or trade in of a re-vinned vehicle:

  • Conduct a detailed review of the vehicle's history using resources like CARFAX and Registration History. Look for inconsistencies in the vehicle registration. For example, a 2019 model first registered in 2022, or U.S. service records after Canadian registration, may need further investigation.
  • Verify the length of ownership by the seller. Be cautious if the seller has owned the vehicle for only a short time before attempting to sell or trade it in.
  • Perform a thorough physical inspection before purchasing, checking for signs of tampering with the federal sticker or VIN. Ensure secondary VINs match the primary VIN.
  • Be wary of sellers pushing for a quick cash sale or offering prices that seem unusually low.
  • If you suspect a vehicle is re-vinned, avoid finalizing the deal and contact your local police.
  • Additionally, we’re also seeing an increase in the number of claims related to the purchase of vehicles from dealerships using fraudulent cheques and bank drafts. Ensure safe transactions by diligently verifying these payments with the issuing banks.
