CADA leaders meet U.S. policy makers in Washington

CADA’s Executive Committee meetings are always important events, but last week CADA’s Chair, Executive Committee, committee members, and senior CADA leaders held their meeting in Washington, D.C. in the epicenter of an ongoing trade and tariff dispute that has disrupted the auto sector and the automotive supply chain on both sides of the border.

“CADA’s executive led by Chair Paul Williams, really felt it was important to launch CADA’s first Trade Mission to Washington to explain how big of a customer Canadian dealers are of American-made vehicles and American-made auto parts,” said Huw Williams, CADA’s Director of Public Affairs.

Huw Williams said the three-day event, which received extensive media coverage, including leading the CTV National News, had three main pillars: to meet U.S. Senators, Congressional leaders and policy makers; to meet with Canadian trade officials; and to meet with other industry associations with aligned interests, such as NADA.

The meetings had one clear goal: to bring facts and data to support the position that tariffs are harmful for the businesses and consumers on both sides of the border. “We wanted to ensure all parties understood CADA’s stance that automotive tariffs are bad for the economies of both countries, bad for automakers, bad for dealers, and most importantly bad for consumers in both countries,” said Huw Williams.

AMVIC Business License - Check All that Apply

There seems to have been a run of situations where AMVIC Inspections have identified situations where dealers are conducting business in categories that require a separate licence in the Province of Alberta.  Your annual renewal is a great time to check and ensure you are licensed for all aspects of business.  The most common miss these days seems to be in the leasing category.

Please see the various categories as defined by AMVIC:

Vehicle Sales

  • Retailer (new and/or used) – authorized to sell to consumers.
    • Sell new or used vehicles to the general public.
    • Display vehicles for sale.
    • Purchase vehicles from the general public.
  • Wholesaler – NOT authorized to sell to consumers.
    • Sell, consign and exchange vehicles only with other automotive businesses and never to consumers.
    • Export vehicles outside of Canada.
    • Purchase vehicles from consumers only to sell to an automotive business.
    • Businesses may be required to provide a $50,000 security to AMVIC in the form of cash, irrevocable standby letter of credit or surety bond. Please contact licensing to inquire.
  • Agent or broker – NOT authorized to sell to consumers.
    • Negotiate or conduct on a consumer’s behalf an agreement in which the consumer buys, sells or leases a vehicle.

CADA efforts on iZEV rebates pay off for dealers

The new Liberal government in Ottawa agreed to do the right thing and repay Canadian car dealers for paying consumer rebates up front as part of the federal iZEV incentive program.

The program shut down abruptly and unexpectedly in January 2025, and many dealers who had not yet submitted their reimbursement claims through the portal the government set up to administer the program were left in the lurch.

CADA kept up the pressure on Ottawa, demanding that its dealer members be repaid the estimated $11 million they were out of pocket.

“This is a major victory for dealers,” said Huw Williams, CADA’s Director of Public Affairs. “Ottawa has ambitious goals for boosting EV adoption, and treating dealers fairly is essential to keep EV sales momentum going.”

Ottawa held a webinar last week to help guide dealers on the process for submitting claims
